Panic Attacks While Driving

One of the most common times people experience panic attacks is while driving. You would be surprised at how many people suffer from high levels of anxiety and stress simply by driving. Some people are so afraid of driving they simply refuse to get a driver license and resort to other forms of transportation to get around.

Since anxiety and stress are leading causes of panic attacks it is now wonder people experience panic attacks often while driving. Many people excessively fear being stuck in traffic or being hit by oncoming traffic, or simply feel claustrophobic from the feelings of being trapped in a vehicle.

Actually the reality is that phobic drivers are the safest on the road because they are more vigilant. Most car wrecks occur because people simply don’t pay attention or are distracted by everything but driving. This doesn’t mean of course that you should be overly anxious when driving your car, but simply that a low level of anxiety can help a person be more aware of their surroundings when driving which makes them safer on the roads.

Also many people experience excessive fear and anxiety by worrying about their car breaking down and being left stranded in heavy traffic. The reality is thousands of vehicles break down every day and in most cases it is unavoidable. Many of these fears can be overcome by simply being prepared for something to happen. For example, make sure your spare tire is operational, bring a roadside reflector kit, have a flashlight, towrope, emergency numbers handy etc. Simply by being prepared for a situation it will enable you to alleviate feelings of fear and anxiety that can trigger a panic attack while driving.

Another thing to consider is that many people never experience any car wrecks during the course of driving their entire lives. If you play by the rules and pay attention to your surroundings there is a high probability you will never experience a car crash during your lifetime.

The bottom line is that it is simply a waste of time and energy to fear something you cannot control. Who knows what tomorrow brings? And does it really help anything by excessive worry?  Remember, if you don’t let fear control you then you will be one step closer to overcoming panic attacks from tormenting your life.
